Comfortable, layered clothing is recommendable because of the varying temperatures. Good walking shoes or hiking boots are essential for the uneven terrain. Don’t forget rain gear, especially during the rainy season.
The walking involves moderate hiking. Paths can be steep and uneven but are generally manageable for people with an average fitness level. The altitude may be challenging for some, so taking it slow is advisable.
While a guided tour enhance your understanding of the site, there is usually some free time allotted for exploring some areas on your own.
The highest altitude reached is at Machu Picchu itself, which is about 2,430 meters (7,972 feet) above sea level. Ollantaytambo, where the train is boarded, sits at about 2,792 meters (9,160 feet).
Machu Picchu tours operate rain or shine. Bad weather typically does not deter the tour unless it poses a safety risk. Always be ready with appropriate rain gear.
